Models and privacy
Your library stays on your Mac. You choose which AI does the work.
Choose a provider
Section titled “Choose a provider”Open Settings › AI and choose a Provider. Gleanary uses it for new chat messages.
| Provider | Runs on | You need | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-device | Your Mac | Apple silicon and Apple Intelligence turned on | Free |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI’s servers | A ChatGPT subscription | Counts toward your plan’s limits |
| OpenAI API | OpenAI’s servers | An OpenAI API key | Billed to your key |
| Claude | Anthropic’s servers | A Claude API key | Billed to your key |
| Gemini | Google’s servers | A Gemini API key | Billed to your key |
| OpenRouter | OpenRouter’s servers | An OpenRouter API key | Billed to your key |
To use Apple Intelligence, turn it on in System Settings and wait for its model to finish downloading.
You can also choose a Model, and a separate Bulk work model for large jobs. The bulk model is Same as chat unless you change it.
If a request to your provider fails, Gleanary doesn’t switch to another provider on its own.
Connect ChatGPT
Section titled “Connect ChatGPT”Under Account, choose Continue with ChatGPT and sign in. You don’t need an OpenAI API key.
To stop sharing with OpenAI without signing out, turn off Allow sharing with OpenAI.
Add an API key
Section titled “Add an API key”Under API Keys, paste a key for the provider. Gleanary shows the last four characters once it’s saved.
What a provider receives
Section titled “What a provider receives”The first time you choose an online provider, Gleanary asks you to allow it. It doesn’t ask again for each request.
Requests can include:
- your messages and recent chat history
- document titles
- passages from relevant sources
Gleanary doesn’t upload your original files or your whole library.
Keep an automation on your Mac
Section titled “Keep an automation on your Mac”Automations that use AI have an Allow ChatGPT setting. Turn it off to keep that automation on your Mac. It then runs only when your provider is On-device, and skips its run otherwise. See Automations.
Where your library is stored
Section titled “Where your library is stored”Your library is a single database on your Mac, in Gleanary’s Application Support folder. Original files you saved are kept in a folder beside it. Notes are stored inside the database; to save one as a file, choose Export Markdown.
Where your keys are stored
Section titled “Where your keys are stored”Your ChatGPT sign-in and API keys are kept in your Mac’s Keychain. They stay on this Mac and don’t sync to your other devices.
