File with Johnny.Decimal

Gleanary files every item under a numbered category, so each thing has one home.

Gleanary uses Johnny.Decimal, a system that gives every category a two-digit number.

  • Categories are numbered from 10 to 99, such as 31 Agent design.
  • Areas group ten categories. The area 30–39 is named by its first category, 30.
  • Subcategories add two digits after a point, such as 31.04 Agent memory.

The numbers keep categories in a fixed order and give each one a short name you can type.

When your library has no categories, Gleanary offers starter sets. You can also open them later from Settings › Filing › Starter Categories….

  • Essentials
  • Software engineering
  • Writing
  • Product management
  • Design
  • Research & academia
  • Founder & business
  • Personal life

Essentials uses the 10s. Each other set takes the next free block of ten. Adding a set never changes the numbers or names of categories you already have.

When you save a link, the librarian picks the category that fits best and files it there. The message in chat says where, and has an Undo button.

If no category fits well, the item stays unfiled, and Gleanary suggests homes for you to choose from.

An item has one main category. If it fits elsewhere too, its suggestions show Also fits. Choose Also File Here to file it there as well.

In Settings › Filing:

  • Add Category, Add Subcategory and Add Area (X0) create new ones.
  • Edit… changes a category’s number or name. Changing the number moves the category.
  • Delete… removes a category. Its items stay in your library. Items left with no category become unfiled.

You can also ask in chat, for example:

@librarian add a category for cooking

The librarian proposes new categories, renames and filings for you to review. Renaming keeps the number and the items filed there. Changes across many items need ChatGPT.
