Chat with Gleanary

Most of your work in Gleanary starts with a message in chat.

Type in the box at the bottom of the chat and press Return. The box reads Ask Gleanary or save something… when it’s empty.

  • To save a page, paste its link on its own. If you paste several links at once, Gleanary saves each one as a separate request.
  • To ask a question, write it as you would to a person. The assistant searches your library to answer.
  • To ask about an open item, type while it’s open. The box reads Ask about this document…, and the item is attached to your message.

Type @ to open a list of the five agents. Choose one to send the request to that agent.

Mention Use it to
@assistant Ask questions and coordinate other work.
@librarian Save sources and notes, and file them by category.
@researcher Get summaries and comparisons grounded in your sources.
@curator Find related items and propose links between them.
@writer Get a finished document in your writing style.

You can mention more than one agent in a message. If you mention none, the assistant takes the request.

The agent that does the work may differ from the one you mentioned. Gleanary gives each step to the agent whose job it is. For example, saving a page always goes to the librarian.

You can attach up to four items to a message.

  • To attach a file, click + and choose a PDF, HTML, text or Markdown file. The librarian saves and summarizes it.
  • To attach something already in your library, choose Add to Chat on the item. It’s added to your draft without sending it.

Attached items show as chips above the box, such as Source: or Note: followed by the title.

While a task runs, you can keep typing. New messages wait in a queue, shown as N queued. You can move queued messages earlier or later, or remove them.

To stop the current task, click the stop button or press Esc.

If you quit while messages are queued, the queue shows Paused the next time you open Gleanary. Choose Resume to run them or Clear to drop them.

Choose New Topic to start fresh. Replies after a new topic don’t use earlier messages unless you refer back to them. A New topic marker shows where each topic starts.

If you haven’t sent a message for six hours, Gleanary offers to start a new topic.

Gleanary sends the model only the most recent messages in the current topic, not your whole chat.

Choose Clear Conversation… to delete your messages. This also stops the current task and dismisses any changes waiting for review. Your saved notes, sources and applied links stay in your library.
